The right team for every phase of the business cycle depends on the appropriate
balance of team members who are inherently
- Entrepreneurial
- Enterprising
- Process Drivers
By inherently, we understand that the natural and innate ‘wiring’
of the individual’s brain is matched to the role he or she is expected to play
in the success of the team.
Although it is possible for an individual’s brain wiring to be adapted (i.e. nurture), there is an innate wiring (i.e. nature) that makes it more natural to fulfil certain roles with greater motivation and success.
At Seirios we understand that
- Entrepreneurs create business
- Enterprising people grow
business - Process Drivers manage business
A balanced team i.e. the right team needs the appropriate blend of all three ‘mindsets’ that matches where the business wants to be in the business cycle.
In the Rising Star business the team needs Process Drivers, but there needs to be a bias towards an Entrepreneurial mindset.
In the Steady State business too much entrepreneurial influence is disruptive to growth and there is greater need for the bias towards an Enterprising mindset.
The Mature business will usually have a strong Process mindset bias in the team already. If innovative strategies are being considered for future success individuals with Enterprising or Entrepreneurial mindsets need to be added to the team. It may be possible to identify people with these mindsets from within the team. In some cases it may be necessary to recruit such people on to the team from within the business or from outside.
Motivation Styles
A balanced team also needs alignment of the various motivation styles of the members.
At Seirios we classify these in terms of ‘boundary types’, where a ‘boundary’ represents the context, confinements and limitations in which team members have to work. Individual team members will be motivated to give of their best if they are allowed to work with the work environment boundaries in the ways they are motivationally ‘wired’.
Based on the EntrBRAINeur Research we have identified four boundary types;
Boundary Keepers are motivated when they know exactly what is expected of them and when they and others work according to accepted limitations and procedures.
Boundary Pushers are motivated when the context allows them to complete work to their own satisfaction and to push themselves to give their best. They are motivated to go the extra mile when they have a personal interest in the work they do and are not confined them within tight deadlines
Boundary Fillers are motivated when there is harmony between the members of the team and the work context is ‘filled’ with a relational sensitivity to each team member.
Boundary Developers do not like to be confined by limits and are motivated to shape and develop the boundaries to move things forward and challenge accepted processes.
When the Motivation Style of team member are aligned with their role as Entrepreneurial. Enterprising or Process Driving there will be an optimum team dynamic
